Investing in our Local Labour Market

A Diverse and Multi-Generational Workforce

Toronto remains a destination of choice for newcomers to Canada, along with Montreal and Vancouver. Over one third of the newcomers who arrive annually in Canada chose to settle in some part of the GTA. Although newcomers arriving in Toronto are highly educated and skilled, many face barriers integrating into the local labour market.

Many businesses in Toronto expect labour shortages as baby boomers approach retirement age. Integrating newcomers and other diverse groups into the labour market is now a recognized priority for the City of Toronto. By 2011, it is estimated that all net labour force growth in Canada will be newcomers (Statistics Canada, 2006 and Conference Board of Canada, 2009).

Generation Y is the "up and coming" workforce with different views on work-life balance and earning expectations. Also, new technologies are also rapidly redefining the way we do business and constantly require businesses and employees to update, adapt and learn new skill sets.

With four different generations working together how are employers managing and leveraging generational traits, expectations and experiences? Are employers prepared to face expected labour shortages and hire from new and diverse groups? What about adapt to new technologies, does your organization have a technology plan?

TWIG held an event entitled Diversity: Strategies for the Changing Workforce to discuss these  issues. See our solutions for more details.
