New Models of Engagement: Connecting People, Employers and Jobs
Who will you need to hire 5 years from now? In 10 years? 20 years? Who will you be looking for, and where will you find them? And with some sectors already forecasting significant labour shortages, what can the government and the education sector do now to prevent this situation from becoming reality?
Featuring Mayor David Miller and The Honorable Minister John Milloy, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities and Minister of Research and Innovation, this half day symposium focused on the challenges and solutions of Toronto’s changing labour market.
TWIG and the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) organized the symposium to start a conversation and create an ongoing process that ensures the priorities of employers are heard by, and can inform, government programs and policies.
Panelists include:
• Richard Lyall, President of RESCON
• Kevin A. Maynard, Executive Director, Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council
• Catherine Chandler-Crichlow, Executive Director, Toronto Financial Services Alliance
• Bill Pallet, Sr. VP, People & Quality, Delta Hotels and Resorts
Participant Discussion Questions:
• What are the core skills and talents you look for in your employees, and what kind of skills will you need in the future? How and where do you find talent you need?
• How can the government help the private sector tap into existing talent and ensure that the skills and competencies already present in our workforce will be effectively utilized?
• The government has a clear vision of how Ontario can move forward to become North America's leader in the green economy. How will the private sector participate in realizing that vision? Who will work in the jobs created by the Green Energy Act? How will we ensure that the skills of the workforce match the skills and competencies those jobs require?
• How will we, in Ontario, work together to reskill and upskill those who were affected by the downturn in the economy?
