Skills for Building Energy Efficient Construction

A report on training available to construction trades and the transfer of skills for energy efficient building systems.

The market for energy efficiency in the construction of new buildings and retrofit of existing buildings is growing rapidly, especially in the institutional sector. This market is driven both by the rising cost of energy and a growing commitment by industry professionals to environmental design. A number of initiatives have contributed to this development, including:

  • incentive programs that subsidize energy efficient construction and building retrofits; certification programs that provide guides for sustainable buildings;
  • labelling programs that provide green marketing tools for builders;
  • and improved energy efficiency requirements in building codes.

This report was written in 2006 when Ontario’s building and construction sector was beginning to adopt energy efficiency practices that could transform the marketplace. The pace of this transformation has increased due to market demand, new standards and regulations, and the transfer of skills and knowledge about energy efficient building systems and products to trades, technicians and professionals.

The report describes current training available (from 2006) to construction trades and building operators, identifies weaknesses in the training, and makes a number of recommendations to overcome these problems in the context of the development of the market for energy efficient construction in the Greater Toronto Area.
