St. James Town Mapping Project
An online map of local resources for St. James Town, Toronto
This project is a collaboration with the Downtown East Community Development Collective (DECDC) and Ryerson University's Geography Department. The goal is to test the effectiveness of online mapping and increase access to resources at the neighbourhood level.
In the summer of 2009 three youth from the St. James Town neighbourhood were hired to:
- collect images and media on local services
- contact and collect information on local resources
- input information into a database
- collaborate on the design and categorization of resources
- consult and survey agencies on needs and recommendations for the map
- consult with the community on needs and internet usage
- promote the website through a community event
Youth gained valuable first work experience and developed the first stage of the map. To see what the youth have to say about their work check out their blogs!
